How to use the Floor Plan Measurement & Estimator
Measure a rectangular footprint on a plan image using a known reference distance, then send confirmed dimensions to the material estimator. You can also enter dimensions manually without uploading a plan.
Step-by-step guide
Choose manual entry or plan measurement
Enter measurements lets you type length and width immediately. Measure a plan accepts PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 10 MB. Export the relevant PDF sheet to an image first.
Set units and a known reference
Use a flat, axis-aligned, undistorted drawing with one consistent scale. Enter a distance marked on that drawing in the selected units. A perspective photograph, rotated footprint or drawing with mixed scales will not measure reliably with this method.
Select four points on the image
Click or tap the two endpoints of the known distance first. Then choose two opposite corners of the rectangular footprint, aligned with the imageās horizontal and vertical axes. Reset measurement points lets you start again.
Check and edit the dimensions
Review the confirmed length and width. Compare them against drawing annotations and correct them if necessary. You can always type the dimensions instead of selecting points.
Continue to the material estimate
The confirmed footprint and units transfer to the calculator. Enter wall height, interior wall lengths, openings, material specifications and rates there. Uploading an image alone does not detect rooms or produce a complete estimate.
Worked example
Example: the reference line is 100 image pixels long and its real length is 10 m. The opposite footprint corners are 200 pixels apart horizontally and 300 pixels apart vertically.
| Measurement / result | Calculation |
|---|---|
| Image calibration | 10 m Ć· 100 pixels = 0.1 m per pixel |
| Confirmed length | 200 Ć 0.1 = 20 m |
| Confirmed width | 300 Ć 0.1 = 30 m |
| Footprint area in the estimator | 20 à 30 = 600 m² for one floor |
Pixels are the imageās original coordinates; the tool accounts for its displayed size. Accurate reference endpoints matter. Verify the resulting dimensions before using them to estimate materials.
How it calculates: method & limitations
Scale calibration
Scale = entered reference distance Ć· distance between the first two points. The reference distance is measured between those image points in pixels.
Rectangular footprint measurement
Length = horizontal pixel difference between the last two points Ć scale. Width = vertical pixel difference Ć scale. This measures an axis-aligned rectangle, not an irregular outline or individual rooms.
Image handling
The selected image stays in this browser tab. It is not uploaded to HMC or attached to an account. Reloading or closing the tab can remove the image. Remove image clears the current preview and measurement points.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a known distance from a different drawing scale or an inset detail.
- Measuring a perspective photo or a footprint rotated relative to the image axes.
- Selecting the same point twice or picking adjacent corners rather than opposite corners.
- Assuming the image is analysed automatically for rooms, wall thickness or openings. Those still need confirmation.
Your questions, answered
Can I upload a PDF drawing?
Not directly in this version. Export one plan sheet as a PNG, JPEG or WebP image up to 10 MB.
Can I estimate without an image?
Yes. Choose Enter measurements, type the confirmed length and width, and continue to the material estimate.
Does the tool automatically recognise every room?
No. It uses your reference line and opposite rectangle corners to measure a footprint. Room recognition, irregular shapes and automatic wall extraction are not included.
What if the drawing has no known dimension?
A reliable scale needs at least one real distance. Obtain a measured dimension or enter verified footprint measurements manually. Do not guess the scale from image size.
Can I use this on a phone?
Yes. Tap the image to select points, or use the manual fields. If small drawing details are difficult to select, use a clearer image or verify the dimensions manually.
