How to use the Construction Material Calculator
Use this material and cost estimator to plan masonry units, wall paint and optional concrete volume for a rectangular project. Start with your dimensions, replace the material assumptions and add supplier rates if you want a priced subtotal.
Step-by-step guide
Choose units and measure the footprint
Select metres or feet, then enter the outside length, width, wall height and number of identical floors. If floors differ, calculate each separately. Switching units converts the entered lengths and opening area.
Include interior walls and subtract openings
Enter the combined length of interior walls on one floor. Enter the total door and window opening area across all floors once. Leave either at zero only when it really does not apply.
Check material specifications
Open Material specifications & allowances. Replace the wall thickness, masonry unit dimensions, joint allowance, waste, paint coats and product coverage. These values are assumptions, not recommended construction specifications. Concrete is optional: enter a depth in millimetres to include its volume.
Add your supplier rates
Open Your material rates, choose a currency and enter prices per masonry unit, litre of paint and cubic metre of concrete. Blank rates stay unpriced. Changing currency clears entered rates; it does not perform a currency conversion.
Calculate, review and keep the result
Select Calculate estimate. Check quantities and exclusions before ordering. Save inputs and Load saved inputs work in this browser only. Download CSV exports the material table; Print / PDF opens your browserâs print dialog. After editing an input, calculate again.
Worked example
Example: one 10 m Ă 8 m rectangular floor, 3 m wall height, no interior walls or openings, and 0% waste for a simple arithmetic demonstration. This is not a suggested waste allowance.
| Measurement / result | Calculation |
|---|---|
| Covered area | 10 à 8 = 80 m² |
| Net wall area | 2 à (10 + 8) à 3 = 108 m² |
| Masonry assumptions | 230 mm wall; 230 Ă 110 Ă 75 mm units; 10 mm joints |
| Estimated masonry units | Round up 108 à 0.23 á (0.24 à 0.12 à 0.085) = 10,148 pcs |
| Paint, both wall faces | 108 à 2 faces à 2 coats á 10 m²/L = 43.2 L |
| Optional 100 mm concrete depth | 80 Ă 0.10 = 8 mÂł |
If paint is 10 AED/L and the other rates are blank, only paint is priced: 43.2 Ă 10 = 432 AED. That is a priced-items subtotal, not a complete project budget. The form starts with 5% waste; change it to 0% to reproduce this particular example.
How it calculates: method & limitations
Floor and wall areas
Covered area = length Ă width Ă identical floors. Net wall area = [2 Ă (length + width) + interior wall length per floor] Ă height Ă floors â total openings. Calculations convert lengths to metres internally.
Masonry unit approximation
Units = net wall area à wall thickness á modular unit volume à (1 + waste / 100), rounded up to a whole unit. Modular unit volume uses length, width and height with the joint allowance added to each. This volume method is approximate: bonds, corners, mixed wall thicknesses and actual unit shapes can change the order quantity. Mortar is not estimated separately.
Paint and concrete
Paint litres = net wall area à 2 wall faces à coats á coverage à waste factor, rounded up to 0.1 L. It excludes ceilings and does not round to retail pack sizes. Optional concrete = covered area à entered depth à waste factor, rounded up to 0.001 m³. This does not design slabs, foundations or reinforcement.
What the subtotal excludes
Material line cost = rounded quantity Ă your unit rate. The subtotal adds priced lines only. Labour, delivery, tax, foundations, reinforcement and finishes other than wall paint are excluded. This is a planning estimate; have a qualified professional review measurements and suitability before buying.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a floor area in a field that asks for a length.
- Entering opening area for one floor when the project has several identical floors.
- Treating a blank rate as a free material, or the subtotal as the total build cost.
- Using the same wall specification for different wall types. Estimate different specifications separately.
- Assuming both wall faces need the same paint. This tool paints both faces; use a separate measurement for a different finish.
Your questions, answered
Can I calculate without a drawing?
Yes. Enter your measured dimensions directly. A drawing and an account are not required to use this calculator.
Does this provide live building material prices?
No. Enter your own supplier quotes in the chosen currency. The tool does not fetch market prices or convert currencies.
Can I estimate an irregular building or different floors?
Split the project into measurable rectangular sections or floor types and calculate them separately. Avoid counting shared walls twice. Mixed specifications need separate estimates.
Will my uploaded plan or saved estimate be public?
Plan images are processed in the current browser tab. Saved estimator inputs use this browserâs local storage; they are not saved to an HMC account and will not follow you to another device. Clearing browser storage can remove them.
Can I use this as a structural or final purchasing specification?
No. It is an approximate planning tool. Confirm quantities, masonry details, paint coverage, concrete requirements and ordering allowances with your supplier and a qualified professional.
